LITTLE PICTURES

New tools can encourage us to see and work in new ways. My ever-present smartphone functions as an electronic sketchbook, allowing me respond to the environment with a speed and flexibility not possible before. For me, the immediacy of smartphone imaging encourages spontaneity – a quality that is perhaps less significant to my other work.

OLD SOUTH / NEW SOUTH

This ongoing body of work began in 2003, when I returned to the American South after several years living in the Midwest. The photographs blur the distinction between detached observation and admittedly romanticized memory, revisiting places that are at once distant and immediate. As a whole, the series traces my continuing rediscovery of the South – a place I find both comfortingly familiar and seductively enigmatic.

THE DIXIE SQUARE PROJECT

In 2000, I began a three-year project to document the remains of Dixie Square Mall. Closed in 1979, the mall stood vacant and deteriorating until 2012, when a federal grant made demolition possible. Informed by both the visual language of abstraction and the tradition of documentary photography, The Dixie Square Project records and reevaluates the aesthetic qualities of 1970s suburban consumer spaces, thirty years after the fact.

ITALIA: NUOVE VISIONI

Italy is a rich synthesis of ancient and modern, where celebrated landmarks of Western history co-exist on equal terms with pop culture ephemera. This series of photographs employs both humor and abstraction in a personal examination of contemporary Italian culture.
